Below is a listing of on-going classes. New classes are added each month. If you would like to teach a class or facilitate a program, contact Program Director Amanda Lawrence, 302-734-1200 x129.

Dancing

Register for dance classes at MMC Member Services. Call 302-734-1200 x167, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM.

  • Ballroom Dancing - learn the foxtrot, cha-cha, waltz and other dances along with technique and posture. Exercise your body and mind and have fun as well. All levels of experience from beginners to advanced welcome. Instructors: Ted and Yoshie Briggs. Selected Tuesday evenings each month, 7-9 p.m. Cost is $5 per class for MMC Members; $10 for non-members. Pay at the door.

    • September 5 & 19 in the Palmer Room
    • October 3 in the Palmer Room, Oct. 23 & 31 in the East Wing Ballroom
  • High Impact Line Dancing - This is not a beginner's class, but for those who are regulalry dancing at either intermediate or advanced levels.

    • Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Beginner Line Dancing - Are you new to line dancing? Learn the basic steps of this popular form of dance - also a great way to exercise! No partner needed. The first portion of the class is devoted to teaching the basic steps and simple dances for first-time line dancers. Please alert the instructor at the beginning of the class if you are new. The last portion of the class is beginner level dancing.

    • Wednesdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Intermediate Line Dancing - Hone your dancing skills in this intermediate level class. Prior line dance experience recommended.

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Advanced Line Dancing - Learn new steps and share your passion for line dancing through performance opportunities with the Steppin' Seniors.

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 - 11:30 a.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Couples Line Dancing - Instructor: Ken Ellers. Grab a partner and become a line dancing duo. The class is at intermediate level, but beginners are welcome to join. Coming with a partner is ideal, but is not necessary to join the class.

    • Wednesdays 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Soul Line Dancing - Fun, exciting, and most importantly, a great way to work out. Join Coleen Coleman as she guides you through this low-moderate-impact line dance experience.

    • Wednesdays, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Free for MMC Members. Palmer Room
  • Tap Dancing - Instructor: Linda Gaither. Cost for an 12-week session in $42 for MMC members; $62 for non-members. You may also pay by the class - $5 for MMC Members; $10 for Non-members. Attire is tap shoes and comfortable clothes. Non-rubber, hard back shoes are sufficient for your first class. Please register at MMC Member Services as space is very limited. The 12-week fall sesion runs from Sept. 6 to Nov. 22

    • Beginner Level: Wednesdays, 10:15 - 11:15 a.m.Activity Room 8
    • Intermediate Level: Wednesdays, 5-6 p.m. in the Palmer Room
  • Jazz Dance - Instructor: Linda Gaither. Jazz has become one of the most popular dance styles in recent years. It is an energetic and fun way to exercise. Cost for an 12-week session in $42 for MMC members; $62 for non-members. You may also pay by the class - $5 for MMC Members; $10 for Non-members. Attire is comfortable clothes and jazz or ballet slippers. If you do not own those, you can wear other non-rubber sole shoes (line dance shoes are sufficient).
    Please register at MMC Member Services as space is very limited. The 12-week fall session runs from Sept. 6 - Nov. 22

    • Beginner Level: Wednesdays, 9 - 10 a.m. Activity Room 8
    • Intermediate Level: Wednesdays, 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. in the Palmer Room
  • Beginner Ballet & Lyrical Fusion - Instructor Linda Gaither adds this new class teaching a fusion of lyrical and ballet at a beginner level. This dance style focuses on slow controlled movements that are low impact. Ballet and lyrical often tell a story or portray a feeling through movement. Attire is comfortable clothes and ballet slippers. Non-rubber sole shoes are sufficient before purchasing ballet slippers. The 12-week fall session runs from Sept. 6 - Nov. 22

    • Beginner Level: Wednesdays, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Activity Room 10 (Sunroom)
Evening Dances

There are several evening dance opportunities available at MMC.

  • MANNA Dinner Dances - held each month in the East Wing Ballrooms of MMC from 6 to 9 p.m. and feature a buffet meal followed by dancing. Cost is $12 per person for age 60 and older; $13 for those under 60. Tickets must be purchased in advance at MMC Member Services. No tickets are available at the door.

Classes

Classes are available for a wide variety of interests such as fine arts, knitting, woodcarving, quilting, languages, Bible study, and more. Classes are free to MMC Members unless otherwise noted. Sign up at MMC Member Services. 302-734-1200 x167.

  • Fine Art - Instructor: Phyllis Shier. Work with a variety of mediums. You do not need to have any special talent to enjoy the artistic experience of this class. All levels are welcome. Materials needed: sketch pad, pencils, eraser, watercolors, and watercolor paper. FEE:MMC Members - $5 per class or purchase an art card ($20 for 6 classes). Non-members - $8 per class. 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, 10 a.m. - noon in the Art Room.

  • Beginner Drawing - Instructor: Winifred Way. Learn the fundamentals of drawing - basic shapes, lines and shadows. Learn perspective to give the right height, width and depth of an object. Classes meet in 6 week sessions in Activity Room 5 from 10-11:30 a.m. Cost is $60 for members and $80 for non-members. Supplies needed are a 12" x 18" pad of newsprint and two #8B drawing pencils. Check for next start date and sign up at Member Services.

  • Watercolor Workshop - Instructor: Carol Lettieri. Learn the basics and creative techniques of watercolor painting. Workshops are held each month. Cost is $7 per session for MMC Members; $10 for non-members. Cost does not include supplies. A supply list is provided at time of registration. The next workshop is Aug. 16, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Sign up at Member Services.

  • Card Making Class - Instructor: Diane Cook. Learn skills such as card layout, structure and stamping techniques. Try out the newest tools and materials. All supplies and tools are provided to create up to three cards per class session. Classes meet monthly on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Activity Room #1. Each session is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Register at Member Services at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot.

  • Copic Marker Card Coloring Class - Join Diane Cook, a certified Copic Marker instructor, at this new nine session class teaching the use of Copic (alcohol ink) markers. Each class meets on the third Tuesday of the month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Activity Room #1. The sixth of this nine class session is Aug. 15 and it's not too late to join. A variety of flowers are used each month to teach color blending. Students leave with one complete card each class. Each class is $7 for MMC members and $10 for non-members and this covers the use of all supplies to create one card. Sign up at least 24 hours in advance so enough supplies are prepared.   • Woodcarvers Connection - A gathering of woodcarving hobbyists. Bring your latest completed project, pattern ideas and projects to work on in the welcoming company of others who share your interest. Participating group in the National Eagle Cane Project. Free for MMC Members. Annual dues of $25 for non-members over the age of 50 who would like to join. Thursdays, 9 a.m. in the Art Room.

  • Forrest Ave. Quilters - The Forrest Ave. Quilters meet to work on projects and share ideas about quilting. Wednesdays, 9 a.m. in the Art Room. Free for MMC Members.

  • Twisted Stitchers - The Twisted Stichers meets Wednesdays, 1 to 3 p.m. in Activity Room 8. All items are donated to different charities including Bayhealth, the Veterans Home in Milford, and World Vision. This group is Free to MMC members.

  • Learn to Crochet - Edie Hobbs offers a basic Beginner and specialized crochet skill classes. Classes are $6 an hour. Call Edie at 302-383-7741 to schedule.

  • Intro to Jewelry Making - Instructor: Gilda Jennings. Class meets monthly on the third Friday in the Painted Star gift shop at MMC (entrance located behind the Member Services desk). Each class is $17 for members and $25 for non-members and includes all supplies. A sample is of the monthly project is available at Member Services. You must sign up at Member Services at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot. A minimum of 4 participants is required.

If you like to play games, MMC has several opportunities for you to learn and play.

  • Scrabble - Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 12 to 3 p.m., Activity Room 4

  • Canasta - Wednesdays, 12 to 4 p.m., Activity Room 4

  • Bridge - Thursdays, 12:15 to 3:30 p.m., Activity Room 4

  • Open Game Room - Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays noon to 3 p.m., Activity Room 3

  • Mahjongg - Tuesdays and Thursdays, Noon to 4 p.m., Activity Room 8

  • Advanced Mahjongg - Tuesdays and Thursdays, Noon - 3 p.m., Activity Room 3

  • Pinochle - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 8:30 a.m. to Noon, Activity Room 4

  • Bid Whist - Monday through Friday starting at 3 p.m., Activity Room 4

  • Bingo - Monday and Wednesday, 12:30 to 3 p.m., Activity Room 1

  • Duplicate Bridge - Monday, 9:30 - 2:30 p.m. and Friday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Palmer Room, FEE

  • Shuffleboard - Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon, Palmer Room

  • Dominoes - Wednesdays noon to 3 p.m., Activity Room 4

 

Clubs

Socialize with others who share your interests

  • MMC Singles - The MMC Singles meet the first Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Center. In addition to the monthly meetings, the singles schedule a variety of outings and other social events. The group is open to all MMC Members who are single, widowed or divorced.

  • Book Club - If you are interested in reading and sharing your thoughts about what you have read, join this lively monthly book club. The group meets the last Wednesday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. in MMC Room 42. Light refreshments are served. Sign up at MMC Member Services in advnace to get the latest book title. 302-734-1200 x142. Free for MMC Members.

  • Harmonica Club - The harmonica is a great instrument to play. Advanced only. Ability to play single notes is desired since the group performs in concerts. The group meets Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. in MMC Activity Room 5 (Sept. 25 & Oct. 2 in Activity Room 7). Free for MMC Members. Resumes Sept. 25.

  • Glee Club - Harmonize on the old songs you know and love. The Modern Melody Makers meet each Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (10 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month) in the Longwood Room. Any MMC member who enjoys singing and music is invited to join - instrumentalists also welcome!

  • Chess Club - Have fun, exercise your mind and compete with others. The Chess Club meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon in Activity Room 4. Free for MMC Members. If you would like a lesson, sign up at Member Services, otherwise - just show up with your game!

  • NEW Photography Club - Facilitator: John Risko. The club is designed for all photography enthusiasts who want to learn from others and share their experiences, tips, techniques, camera settings and editing skills. Fun photography outings and photo challenges will be planned. Please note: this club is not designed to teach photography, however, all skill levels are welcome to join and learn from one another. This club is open to MMC members only and is FREE. Please sign up at Member Services, 302-734-1200 x167.
